We want to be a part of it - Brew York, Brew York! Yes, next up for the Knutsford Beer Festival spotlight is York's 20hl brewhouse and beer hall. So far we've profiled modern hop-forward IPAs and flavourful gluten free beer so, to switch it up a bit this week, we've teamed up with the festival's curator and Dexter and Jones beer expert @mycraftbeerbelly to look at Brew York's signature Tonkoko milk stout.

The Brewery

Brew York, York.

Set up by two beer-obsessed friends, Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham, Brew York is located within the tourist haven of York's historic city walls. Their vision was to create an experience and location as special as the craft beer itself. Making waves at a few home-brew competitions gave them the confidence to begin the process of converting a large warehouse into their award-winning brewery. Their first beers were poured in March 2016.

If juicy, hazy beers showed us what was possible with modern IPAs, beers like Tonkoko did the same for stouts. Milk stouts have the body to carry so much flavour which can contrast beautifully against robust and bitter dark malts. A perfect example of that, Tonkoko is thickened up with oats and lactose and then coconut, cacao nibs, Tonka beans and vanilla are all added to the mix.

“You get this incredible wave of creamy coconut and chocolate. It's often described as 'liquid Bounty' and that's about right.”

The award winner has become so popular that it launched its own series of stouts. Start spreading the news...
